Medical steel for instruments

Medical steel, also called surgical steel, is a stainless steel grade containing minimum 13% of chromium. Medical instruments are made of the finest stainless steel grades. These qualities can be sterilized and, depending on the chromium content, good to very good corrosion resistant. Medical stainless instruments include tweezers, scissors, retractors, hooks, needles, calipers, forceps, DCR-instruments and cannulas. They are used in hospitals, surgical rooms, in laboratories and in medical research.

Stainless steel for medical instruments

Medical stainless steels or Surgical steels are mostly hardenable and have a wide variety of application possibilities. They are as well characterized by their high strength and yet good formability, with the best possible compromise of corrosion resistance even after cleaning and sterilizing. Furthermore this steel has to be suited for the precision manufacturing of medical instruments.

Medical stainless steel grades

Medical cured steel contains minimum 0.17% carbon. Chromium and Molybdenum is added in order to improve the steelís corrosion resistance. Nickel can be added to make the steel less brittle. The grades of steel for medical instruments are martensitic or precipitation-hardenable steels. The most common medical steel grades which donít need to be cured are the austenitic 316 and 316L.
Within the hardenable martensitic grades those are the AISI 420 and AISI 440 families. The most important norm for instruments is the ASTM F899, which defines the steel grades and properties for instruments.

Although there are various standard grades such as 420 A (1.4021), 420 C (1.4034), 431 (1.4057) for medical instruments, we have to mention nowadays modern steel grades that meet today's high requirements even better. These are 431 X (Chronifer M-15 X), the powder metallurgical 1.4057, XN-16 (1.4543), Custom 465 (1.6414), as well as 440 XH and ~440 B.
